Light poles from around the Beirut airport were converted and used to fly the United States Marine Corps and American flag in Lebanon from 1982-1983. After the October 23, 1983 bombing, Marines used a pole like this one to erect their colors over the ruble left from the suicide attack that killed 241 of their brothers.
Discovered during a trip to Lebanon in June of 2023, this flagpole was at the original site of the Marine BLT HQ under overgrown bushes, dirt, and gravel. With the help of the Marines and staff at the American Embassy of Beirut, the flagpole was recovered and brought back to the embassy. It was raised again as a flagpole over the memorial at the American Embassy in Beirut at the 40th anniversary on October 23, 2023.
Named “Resilience” by the Marines who recovered it, this pole proudly carries the Marine Corps flag. It represents the resilience and spirit of all those lost in Lebanon from 1982 to 1984.
